Students from the Marine Research Club have assisted in picking up debris by Cheeseburger reef.
“The club is made up of veterinary students and faculty of Saint Matthew’s Medical School as well as spouses,” said Paulette Joel of Lobster Pot Dive Centre. “Their goal is to do reef clean-up in as many different sites around the island as possible, as well as to do research on endangered species. [They picked up] as much debris as possible in one dive. They strive to do at least one site per month of either clean up or research.”
Ms Joel said they set up the event with Nick Anderson, secretary of the club about the clean-up.
“At Lobster Pot, we are concerned about the welfare of the reef and the sea life that relies on it to survive,” Ms Joel said. “We will offer the tanks, air and weights to any proper recognised group organisation who wishes to arrange with us to help keep our reef clean.”
