The Dominos Lady Heels have clinched the regular season title in women’s basketball.
Dominos thrashed the Island Heritage Silver Mist 67-38 at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre. Last Thursday’s match was part of the Cayman Islands Basketball Association 2012 national women’s league.
With the victory, the Lady Heels are 6-1 atop the standings. Among those pleased with that status is newcomer Lise Baril. The Canadian states the victory and the season thus far was a team effort.
“It was a team effort and we played hard on defence,” Baril said. “We went for the fast-break on both ends. We definitely played as a team. We’re confident with the playoffs coming up.
“We’re definitely starting to practice (for the postseason) and play together. We’re going to work on our defence and keep it going. I’m from Canada and I was in a few places like Toronto and Edmonton before moving here in 2004. This is my first season but it won’t be my last. This is a good team, everyone plays well together and there is a good team energy.”
Baril had a quiet game but teamed up with Stacy-Ann Kelly to nab 14 rebounds, three steals and three points. Leading the scoring for the Lady Heels were Courtisha Ebanks (22 points, four steals, three rebounds) and Kamilla Nagy (15 points off four three-pointers). Joanne Remillard and Maggie Ebanks combined for 18 points, 12 rebounds, six steals and three blocks.
The Silver Mist, now 1-5, had 10 points off two treys from Letanya Thompson. Lavern Ebanks added nine points and five rebounds with Samantha McField and Carrie Barnett combining for six points, 13 rebounds and five steals.
Dominos had help last Thursday from 3-4 Welly’s Cool Spot. The youngsters snapped a four-game losing skid by coming back from as much as 19 points to defeat the 3-3 Home Gas Flames 66-60. Home Gas looked to have the game won by half-time with a 40-21 lead. However Welly’s fought back to win the last two quarters 21-14 and 24-6.
Orchestrating the comeback was Chloe Powery, who had a team-high 20 points (including four treys), four rebounds and three steals. April Ebanks had a crucial double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds. Schamarrah McCarthy and Christina McLean combined for 18 points, 13 rebounds and four assists.
The Flames had good efforts from La-Torae Nixon (25 points, 15 rebounds, nine steals), Meredith Whitney (13 points with two treys, 11 rebounds) and Sade Wood (11 points off three treys, three steals).
Matches continue this Thursday, 22 March, at Camana Bay from 6pm.
