There is a need to recruit more swimming officials in the Cayman Islands and this week a top official from the United Kingdom is here to school those interested.
Cayman sent five officials to the CARIFTA Swimming Games in the Bahamas in April. The other senior official, Olive Balderramos, was in Japan at a FINA Seminar. This is the chance for prospective officials to learn through a FINA Officiating Clinic organised by the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association.
Neil Booth is the chairman of the management board of the Amateur Swimming Association in the United Kingdom. He is also chair of the ASA swimming officials group and sits on the ASA technical swimming committee and British swimming officials group. Over five sessions, he will be taking volunteers through various stages of learning in the finer points of swimming officiating.
On Wednesday 2 May the first session will be at Governor’s Square Conference Room from 7-9pm and will cover duties of the various swim officials and organisation of FINA.
The second session, on Thursday, again at Governor’s Square Conference Room from 7-9pm will concentrate on intermediate level stroke and turn officiating.
On Friday 4 May it’s a practical lesson at the Lions Pool during the Ernst & Young Here Comes the Summer burner meet organised by the Stingray Swim Club. The session will run from 4-7pm.
Also on Friday, there will be a timing clinic at the pool from 4-5pm.
On Saturday the tuition will move to Cayman Brac with another practical session at the Lions’ Swim Meet for all swim officials who can attend this meet.
The final session is on Sunday 6 May and is a starter and referee clinic over brunch at the home of Olive Balderramos from 10am to noon.
Refreshments will be served at all sessions so contact Adam Roberts on [email protected] if interested in attending.
