Reid serves rivals more PwC misery

There were no big upsets at the PwC Junior Circuit prize-giving ceremony last week, with top seeds Daniel Reid, John-Ross Clough and Bobby Lomax collecting the winners’ trophies.

The ceremony culminated two weekends of hard-fought matches between 30 junior players at the Ritz-Carlton clay courts. This was the fourth PwC tournament of the 2012 season.

Reid, 13, won the 14 and Under division after defeating Callum Theaker in a closely contested final, with Reid proving the slightly more consistent in rallies. Reid beat Nicholas Leonard in the semi-finals and Leonard won his match against the other losing semi-finalist, Josh Bolland, to claim third place in the age group.

Reid has yet to concede a match on the PwC Junior Circuit this year and looks set to retain his No.1 ranking in his age group, determined by The Tennis Federation of the Cayman Islands. Theaker is ranked second, with Bolland third and Leonard fourth.

Clough had another good tournament. He is not an aggressive player, but his ability to consistently get the ball back leaves him comfortably at No.1 in the 12 and Under rankings. In the final he beat Matthew Penner, a relative newcomer to Cayman and the PwC circuit who has much potential. Third in this age group was Jade Wilkinson, whose confident, intelligent play bodes well. She beat Matthew Barnett, the No.3 ranked player, in the losing semi-finalists’ play-off. Jade Wilkinson was one of only two girls in the competition.

The 10 and Under final between Bobby Lomax and Calum Lindsay was a spectator’s delight, with both boys – neither much taller than the net – hitting crisp, clean, top-spun shots from the baseline.

There were also plenty of nice volleys to admire. Lomax proved the stronger in the end, with Lindsay unable to match his consistency. Despite his eventual defeat, Lindsay, ranked No.5, must have gained confidence from this tournament as he beat the higher-ranked Harrison Clough in the semis.

Third in the 10 and Under division was Harrison Clough, who took out Angus Callan-Smith.

The PwC tournaments are held under the aegis of the Tennis Federation of the Cayman Islands, with help from local pros.
