Atonio kicks back

Purple Dragon Martial Arts Cayman has welcomed back Sensei Atonio Thompson back to the Cayman Islands from Purple Dragon World Headquarters in Trinidad.

Sensei Atonio was a visiting instructor in Cayman between 2004-10 assisting Sensei Floyd Baptiste for a few weeks at a time. He has now returned to Cayman to teach full-time.

Sensei Atonio is best known for his high paced weapon routines and his spinning back kick. He has been instructing students on the Purple Dragon Martial Arts system for 13 years and has a great passion for teaching and always strives to advance his teaching techniques with the latest methods.

Through teaching martial arts he has travelled worldwide, including extended stays in the US, Canada and several Caribbean countries.

“I feel a sense of accomplishment when I see that I have positively influenced the life of another, as well as the look on a child’s face when he or she has won their first tournament and stand proudly with their medal or trophy after joining with little confidence.” said Sensei Atonio, 23.

He was born with Purple Dragon in his DNA as both parents and older sister are Purple Dragon black belts. His father, Shihan Thompson, is the second highest ranking member in Purple Dragon Martial Arts internationally.

In 2000, Atonio achieved his black belt and later became the youngest 3rd degree black belt to become a sensei, aged only 17. He is also the youngest 4th degree black belt in Purple Dragon Martial Arts to date.

Some of his recent accomplishments include a Junior Grand Champion title in the Karate Championships held in Canada (2007) and, a gold medal in Traditional Form Division and Heavyweight Fighting Divisions at the World Karate Championships in Trinidad two years ago. At the World Karate Championships in 2010 he was also a part of the winning Demo Team for Trinidad. Atonio was inducted in 2010 into the Caribbean Martial Arts Hall of Fame as one of the Sensei’s of the Year.

Sensei Floyd Baptiste, who currently oversees the Cayman Islands Purple Dragon Martial Arts School, said: “We are very excited and honoured to have Sensei Atonio back with us.

“We are very proud of all his accomplishments, during which time he has acquired a wealth of martial arts knowledge and experience. We know he will be a great asset to the team and his dedication to our students is admirable. We are all looking forward to learning a lot from him.”
