Cookery classes for moms, kids

Children and mothers will get a chance to learn how to cook healthy dishes in new cookery classes hosted by Bon Vivant and Fitness Connection during the coming weeks.

The first of several cooking classes especially for children, called the Seed-to-Table Series, will be held at Bon Vivant in Camana Bay on Wednesday, 19 September.

Cynthia Hew of Bon Vivant said the classes will be an opportunity for children to learn more about making healthy choices and find out where their favourite foods come from.

As well as learning how to cook, the children will visit the Camana Bay Farmer’s Market to get the ingredients and to see fruit and vegetables before they end up in their meals.

“We’re also going to give them seedlings to plant, so they can take those home and grow them and hopefully it will teach them to use herbs and other ingredients,” Ms Hew said.

The classes will be led by Maureen Cubbon, wellness coordinator at Fitness Connection.

On 19 September, the class will focus on wraps, using fresh ingredients to make some wraps for breakfast, lunch and dinner; on 26 September, the class will learn about snacks; on 3 October, tasty, healthy pizzas will be the order of the day; on 10 October, children will learn how to make healthy mini burgers; on 17 October it will be Pasta 101; and the final class on 31 October will focus, aptly enough, on sweet treats when the children will learn how to make some “spook-tacular Halloween treats”.

Classes for the children will be held on Wednesdays, 19 and 26 September and 3, 10, 17 and 31 October. Sessions for younger children, aged 4 to 6 years old, will be held from 2.30 to 3.30pm and for children ages 7 to 12 will be held at 3.45 to 4.45pm. Each session cost $25 and includes recipe, lesson and snacks.

Classes for mom

And mothers are not being forgotten.

On Fridays throughout September and October, Ms Cubbon will show moms how to make tasty dishes for all the family – fast.

“The classes will focus on getting more creative with cooking,” Ms Hew said. “It’s so easy to get caught in a rut of making spaghetti or shepherd’s pie because you know the kids will eat that.”

Classes for mothers cost $35 each and includes recipes, food and a cocktail. They will be held from 11am to 12.30pm on Fridays, 21 and 28 September and 5 and 12 October. On 21 September, the class for moms will be about slow cooking or roasting; on 28 September, it’s all about super side dishes; a grilling and barbecue class will be held on 5 October; and there will be a Pasta 101 class on 12 October.

Space for both the mothers and kids classes is limited to 10 per class.
