The latest netball season looks to be centred around new squads.
A number of sides made impressive debuts in the Cayman Islands Netball Association 2012-2013 open league. Cayman’s national women’s competition saw games at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts.
Among those in action were Storm netball club, which is producing three sides this year. The Supa Storm B team notched a 32-16 victory over fellow newcomers Optimists last Thursday before the Storm Radarz A squad crushed the Flames Strikers 68-34 on Saturday.
The initial impression is that Storm, a participant in years past, is a combination of league veterans from squads such as Roma. Among the stars in the fold are Kay Copeland, Nicola Pringle and Lavern Ebanks.
Other opening contests saw the Cayman National Bank All Stars B defeat the Ernst and Young Hot Shots 42-17 and Rising Stars B crush Island Heritage 53-6. Both of the winning sides feature members of the national Under-21 team.
In the top flight, 2011 champions All Stars A defeated Rising Stars A 45-26 with the Jets beating Renegades 30-26. All Stars have returned with its usual veteran cast including Pauline Bodden, Stacy Reid-Satahoo and Cynthia Collington. Rising Stars are hoping to build around star youngsters Rosemarie Wilson and Martika Williams with the Jets and Renegades hoping to make waves as new clubs.
League matches continue over the next three months on Thursday and Saturday nights at Truman Bodden. The schedule sees an A division triple-header slated for Thursday, 29 November. At 6.45pm, Jets battle Rising Stars A while Storm Radarz take on Renegades. At 8pm, Unity A plays its season opener against the Flames Strikers.
On Saturday, 1 December, the B ranks take centre stage. At 6.45pm, Optimists face Island Heritage while Rising Stars B face the Hot Shots. At 8pm, All Stars B face the Storm Chaserz.
