Turtles will now climb higher

Youth netball is getting an added boost for 2013.

The Cayman Islands Netball Association and Cayman National Bank are coming together for a new programme called the CNB Turtle Netters.

The programme will enable local youngsters to be coached weekly by Cayman’s national coach, Gillian Lee. Sessions will include technical skills, fun games and match play and sessions are available for grades three to 10.

Lee states the endeavour will benefit residents.

“It means that young netballers can get expert coaching so they can become the best netballers they can be, by developing the correct skills and knowledge of the game early on in their lives,” Lee said.

“We are also extremely fortunate to have Cayman National Bank supporting this programme. CNB’s support makes it possible for such a programme to exist. Not only will it provide awesome fun netball activities but enable players to learn netball and the skills required to play at their best.”

The Turtle Netters programme will see all sessions start from 2 February. The Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts will be the venue for 15 sessions. The main days are Saturdays (years three and four at 8-9am and grades 4-5 at 9-10am), Tuesdays (years 7-8 at 3.30-5.30pm) and Wednesdays (grades 9-10 at 3.30-5.30pm). Registration is essential to participate.

CNB has supported netball in the past. In recent years, the company backed a team in the netball association’s open league. This season’s team features talent like Brittany Mobley and Karen Smith-James.

As CNB Marketing Manager Shari Whittaker states, it’s about fostering local talent.

“Cayman National is proud to be a part of this programme as we hold sports as a key factor in our community involvement,” Whittaker said. “In particular, team sports help develop our youth into more well-rounded individuals.”

The two older groups will also enable the netball association to develop a national Under-14 and U16 squad, so get involved to get many more netball opportunities.

A commitment to the 15 sessions is required. Check out the details on the netball association’s web site, caymannetball.ky. For more information, ring Coach Gill at 923-2708.
