The Cayman Islands Tennis Club is hosting the 2013 PWC Cayman Islands Open tournament this week and the Men’s Invitational Championships next month.
The PWC Open started on Friday and the finals are this Saturday. This tournament is open to anyone on the Islands in the men’s, women’s and men’s 50s and over divisions.
The top qualifiers of the men’s open will be invited to participate in the Men’s Invitational Championships from 31 January with the finals on 4 February which will field quite possibly the largest amount of talent the Open has seen in years. It is expected to be even more exciting and competitive than last year’s tournament.
Last year the PWC Open winner was Mica Koll who will be playing in the Men’s Invite this time.
The 2012 Men’s Invite champ was Haydn Lewis who is not certain of defending his title this time.
Coach and organiser Rob Seward said: “But we will be having some newcomers this year who have been in the top 300 in the world which will mean that we should have a few more bigger names in the Men’s Invite.
“Stefanno Ianni from Italy will also try to defend his doubles title from last year playing with Dennis Zivkovic from the US. Both of these players are in the top 125 in the world for doubles.”
Seward is bursting with enthusiasm about getting the public’s support at the club in South Sound.
He said: “People should come down to the club to watch some of the Island’s best players compete against one and other.
“The tournament is the only one of its kind in Cayman. The PWC Open and the PWC Men’s Invitational tournaments is like the Cayman Islands’ version of the Australia Open that is currently going on Down Under. The events are free to watch and the matches will mostly be played in the evening.”
Seward is thankful for the continued support of the sponsors.
“We at the Cayman Islands Tennis Club expresses our deepest gratitude to PWC, the main sponsor of the tournament.
“This is their seventh year sponsoring the event and without them it would be impossible to stage such a successful tournament.
“The club is also very excited to have Cayman National Bank for a second year of sponsoring the Invitational tournament.”
