St. Paddy’s Day falls on Sunday, 17 March, and for some reason across the world people are taking the opportunity to have a few happy times. Zeus knows we all need some of those these days.
The Paseo at Camana Bay is no exception, hence why this Friday, 15 March, sees the live and free appearance of Twisted Clover to get the party started in style. Weekender grabbed Noel Mowbray of the band for a few questions.
Hi there Twisted Clover! Who is in the band and what do y’all play?
The mainstay of the band consists of myself, Noel Mowbray, on guitar and vocals, my daughter, Nastassja Mowbray, on vocals and Royce Scott on bass. Also, we have Mike, our sound engineer and accompanying guitar, and, in order to add to the traditional Irish sound we have guest artist Cheryl Ward on violin. There is a very strong possibility we will have another guest who plays bodhran, which is a traditional Irish drum.
How and when did you guys get together?
I have been involved in various different versions and line ups of this band since the mid-1980s, starting with The Pheasant Pluckers, who used to play at the Lord Nelson and later as the Paradise Band. Now we only play around St. Patrick’s Day each year. This line up consists of original and brand new members, so this will be the first time we’ve all played together.
What kind of songs will you be playing and what vibe will it be?
Being a St. Patrick’s weekend celebration, we will be performing traditional Irish songs, jigs and reels. But we will also include a few tunes by the Cranberries and U2.
Any particular songs/tracks to look out for?
We know a lot of traditional Irish tunes so you can look out for your favourite song and shout out a request.
Will you be playing other gigs or recording any time soon?
As well as Friday night on the Paseo we will be playing at the Treasure Island lobby bar on the Saturday night. We have no plans to do any recording.
What is it about St Patrick’s Day that makes everyone claim to have Irish ancestry?
St. Patrick’s Day was made an official feast day in the early 17th century to commemorate St. Patrick, the most commonly recognised patron saint of Ireland, and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. It is now used as a celebration of Irish culture and all things Irish. And who doesn’t enjoy a good celebration.
What’s your motto?
“Never iron a four leaf clover because you don’t want to press your luck.”
Catch Twisted Clover on Friday, 15 March, from 7 to 10pm at The Paseo, Camana Bay. Admission is free and then at Treasure Island lobby bar on Saturday, 16 March, in the evening.
