Girls struck out in their own way

The 2013 season of the girls Cayman Islands Little League Association got under way last week.

Four teams – Green Light, Al La Kebab, Island Cleaners, and GCM – gathered at the Field of Dreams complex last Wednesday evening for an official opening ceremony.

Division coordinator Jeremy Rice wished everyone success for the season and commented on the importance of girls playing sports, especially as it is Honouring Women’s Month.

Special guest Miriam Foster, director of the Family Resource Centre, threw out the honorary first pitch of the season. The game on field one featured a great pitching duel between Kristi Welds of Green Light and Alikie Kandler of GCM. Both girls were in top form, and runs were hard to come by.

GCM’s Jenneska Johnson and Erynn Walton doubled in the first inning and scored the only two runs of the night for GCM.

Maya Smith scored the first run for Green Light and she later made a clutch catch in left field.

The dramatic moment came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Demi Bush blasted a line drive home run to centre field, giving Green Light a hard fought 3-2 victory.

The game on field two was a tight contest, with a few more runs being scored. Island Cleaners and Al La Kebab entertained the fans, who cheered often and loudly throughout the evening.

The key plays came in the final inning. With the bases loaded and her team trailing by two runs, Al La Kebab’s Tashaunda Hurlston lined a hit to right field, scoring two runners to tie the score, 6-6.

Island Cleaners had a great chance to win the game after loading the bases in the bottom of the final inning, but Alisha Forbes calmly struck out the final hitter, resulting in a tie score.

The second round of games were on Saturday. On field one, Island Cleaners took early leads of 2-0 and 6-4 over GCM behind the bat of Krystal Arch and a fine catch at second base by Jessica Bodden.

GCM rallied with eight runs in the final two innings, resulting in a 12-6 victory. Jenneska Johnson, Erynn Walton and Alikie Kandler scored three runs apiece. The big hits came from the bat of Kayla Whittaker, who doubled and tripled to drive in five runs.

On field two, Green Light defeated Al La Kebab, 15-4, with a combination of solid pitching, good defence and timely hitting. Al La Kebab’s Kenniza Anderson blasted two home runs and Alisha Forbes added one homer, but it wasn’t enough.

For the second game in a row, Green Light were led by tremendous pitching by Welds and another huge hit to the outfield by Bush, who drove in three runs.

Games continue on Wednesdays at 6.30pm and Saturdays at 4.30pm at the Field of Dreams.
