Hot Shots burn Optimists late

The Ernst and Young Hot Shots are the first champions in netball this year.

Ernst and Young beat Optimists, 19-18, in the Division Three final of the Cayman Islands Netball Association 2013 Open League. Last Thursday’s contest took place at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts.

It was a close contest throughout between two teams with 4-1-1 records who had a share of the regular season crown. The score was tied at nine-all by halftime with the Hot Shots winning the second half 10-9.

Guiding Ernst and Young to victory were a quartet of attacking players in Goal Shooter Gemma Butterfield, Goal Attack Kate MacPherson, Wing Attack Kate McRymont and Centre Georgina Loxton.

GS and team captain Milaney Dunn Garwood steadied the Optimists attack, followed by GA Nekita Saintvil, WA Sashana Ranger and C Alexandria Saintvil.

Focus now shifts to the Championship and Plate Divisions, which start their playoffs on Thursday, 2 May, at Truman Bodden. Reigning national champions All Stars A won the regular season crown going undefeated at 8-0. The champs ended their campaign with a 37-33 victory over Rising Stars A, 4-4, last Thursday behind the team’s leading scorer Carolyn Vivian (33 goals).

Stars ended up third in the standings behind the competition’s top scorer Rosemarie Wilson, 245 goals. Storm Radarz, 6-2, finished second after crushing 1-7 Unity, 43-10, in the season finale. Lavern Ebanks guided the offence with 85 goals this year (third-most in her division).

This Thursday, All Stars challenge 1-7 Flames Strikers, who ended up fourth ahead of Unity behind top scorer Marsha Campbell and her 117 goals, at 8pm. Storm battle Rising Stars at 6.45pm.

Cayman National Bank All Stars B, 7-1, topped the Plate ranks ahead of 6-1-1 Supa Storm, sponsored by Lone Star, 3-1-3 Rising Stars B and 1-7 Jets. All Stars, featuring Terry-Ann Hunter, face Jets at 8pm on Thursday while Storm and Rising Stars square off at 6.45pm.
