The Cayman Hockey Club faced the New York City Ladies Field Hockey Team, who prefer the name “Chicks with Sticks”, at the Camana Bay field.
Like the Drew University team who also visited Cayman last week, the New York City team were here as part of their pre-season preparations.
Most of the tour group play for the Big Apple Hockey Club under the strict management of Nigel Traverso and have been champions for the last five years.
In a keenly contested match last Thursday, there was no score at half-time but it was a different affair with just after five minutes of play in the second half when a well worked short corner routine saw New York City take the lead through Lauren Byrne.
Cayman quickly responded through debutant Andy Harding driving into the goal’s bottom corner to equalise.
Both teams had opportunities to score as the game opened up but some outstanding goal-keeping kept the game all tied.
That was until the 60th minute when a quick counter-attack led by Mark Williams saw a great finish by Nigel Bates, giving Cayman a 2-1 lead.
New York City responded with some sustained attacking and were unlucky not to equalise, particularly in the dying moments when a penalty stroke was called for but not awarded.
