Courtis strides out

The first 2013 A Step Ahead Physiotherapy Stroke & Stride series last Wednesday saw a teenager win the men’s race easily.

Matthew Courtis for years has been an exceptional athlete, particularly in swimming and running and in the absence of multiple triathlon champ Marius Acker, the 18-year-old won the first round by a stretch at Sunset House.

Courtis finished the 400 metres swim and two-mile run in 17 minutes, 26 seconds.

Greg Meaker was second in 20:03 and William Balderamos was third in 20:30.

Fastest female was Jody McFarland (24:12) with Andrea Roach second (24:51) and Kia MacFee third (25:36).

The team event was won by the Crazy Canucks pairing of Chris Courtis, Matthew’s brother, and Claude Plamondon in 19:12. Mike Fullerton and Mike McDonald were the second team in 20:26.

The second of the three-race series is on Wednesday 14 August with a 600m swim followed by a two-mile swim. The final race is an 800m swim and two-mile run. Defending champ Marius Acker missed the first round but is back for the
final two.
