In 2012, the club exceeded expectations and won the mixed netball league crown over the previously unbeaten Blazers. Fast forward to 2013 and the Stars are in nearly the same position, with a second place regular season finish in this year’s Camana Bay Summer Mixed League, put on by the Cayman Islands Netball Association.
Technical director for Cayman netball Gillian Lee said both teams will make for a dramatic finish.
“The season has seen great new faces to netball as well as long-standing ones,” Lee said. “Blazers have come out in full force in every game and beat Rising Stars, 24-19, in a hard-fought game earlier this season.
“Last Thursday saw the closest games of the season so far. Unity beat Blazers by one, 22-21, which meant Rising Stars, Blazers and Unity all had one loss for the season. Unity stepped it up and put some flawless netball together, while Blazers made far too many unforced errors. Blazers ended up in first, Rising Stars were second, Unity third, Mixers fourth and Ernst & Young Sunbeams fifth.”
The finals are slated for Wednesday at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Center. The championship game, to be played over four, 10-minute quarters, will be at 7 p.m. as Kimesha Walters and the Blazers challenge Travis Barnes and Rising Stars. Three other games, broken down into two, 10-minute halves, will tip off from there as Unity face Mixers at 8 p.m., Unity challenge Angela Whittaker and the Sunbeams at 8:30 p.m.; and Mixers battle Sunbeams at 9 p.m.
