Tagalog takes the Mick, bests countrymen at Mango Tree

Mel Tagalog continues to hit the Bull’s Eye.

Tagalog would win the 2013 Mickey Mouse Pirates Week darts tournament, sponsored by Budweiser. It would be Tagalog’s third Mickey Mouse triumph, having won in 2009 and 2010. The singles champion would defeat fellow Filipino Randy Cruz in this year’s finals at Mango Tree. Eugene Deguzman, the 2012 winner, would end up without a trophy, losing the third place game to Cliff Weeks.

Cruz said going into the final last Sunday, he was not too confident of his chances.

“I knew Mel would beat me, I did my best to play hard,” Cruz said. “He’s the champion and I respect him a lot. It was a great game, one of the best I’ve ever played.”

Interestingly, Cruz had beaten Tagalog in the doubles championship game prior to the tournament final. Cruz had a fearsome pairing with Cayman legend Hank ‘The Hammer’ Ebanks while Tagalog teamed up with countryman Fernando ‘Bango’ Aromin.

In all, 29 players competed in the annual tournament, organized by the Cayman Islands Darts Association. Rosyl Deguzman and Rodan Asuncion stood out in a mostly Filipino field. Martin Bodden helped out with organizing, along with Cassius Anglin and association president Paul Anglin.

One of this year’s new competitors was Filipino Paolo Sayson, who enjoyed his first Mickey Mouse matches.

“This was my first time and I played in the doubles,” Sayson said. “I liked it, I was encouraged to play by my countrymen and I hope to kick some butt next year.”

The association held its annual general meeting on Wednesday and going forward, the focus will be on preparing for the next Caribbean championship. A perennial podium contender, Cayman finished a disappointing seventh at the 2012 Caribbean Cup in Belize.
