Rotarians assist Philippines typhoon victims

Rotary clubs in the Cayman Islands have donated $15,000 to assist typhoon disaster victims in the Philippines.

The funds have been sent to the Sydney Rotary Club, which is assisting with the relief efforts.

When Rotary presidents saw the devastating effects of the typhoon on the Philippines, they immediately agreed, on behalf of the Rotary clubs, to offer whatever assistance they could.

Inquiries were made of Rotary International’s Area Office in Sydney and contact was then made with Philippines Rotary District Governor Edgar Chiongbian, whose district covers some of the worst areas.

Mr. Chiongbian advised that most of the international Rotarian partners and clubs were keen to send shelter boxes and the like, but what they really needed was food, water, clothes and medicines.

The three Rotary clubs combined their resources and immediately sent a joint donation of about US$16,000 to the special disaster relief fund to allow local Rotarians and other aid agencies to carry on with their relief work locally on the ground.

Mr. Chiongbian wrote from the Philippines: “Thank you very much for your help and please extend our sincere thanks to the Rotarians who helped make this donation a reality.”
