Grammy-winning DJ headlines winter music fest

Grammy award-winning DJ Poet from the Black Eyed Peas will be among those featured at the fourth annual Cayman Islands Winter Music Festival on March 14 and 15.

The event at Calico Jacks aims to bring live music and world-renowned cutting-edge DJs to Cayman.

The festival gets under way on Friday, March 14, at 7 p.m. with local bands Zipper Envy and Business Time. DJ Jonesian will then take over the decks. The veteran DJ has performed alongside such artists as DJ Jazzy Jeff, Beyonce, Naughty by Nature, L’il Wayne, and Depeche Mode.

Rounding off the night’s festivities, founder of Listen Deep and longtime producer and collaborator with the Black Eyed Peas, DJ Poet will take to the stage. A two-time Grammy award nominee and Grammy award winner for Best Pop Vocal 2011, for “Boom Boom Pow,” DJ Poet is known as one of the top artists in electronic dance music.

On Saturday, March 15, the festival takes to the sea for a boat party from 4 to 8 p.m., with music by DJ Evil Twin. Danny Mogg’s mischievous alter ego, DJ Twin is designed as an outlet for house music for the dance floor. Originally from the U.K., Mogg has headlined at some of the world’s top clubs, including Ministry of Sound and Pasha.

From 7 p.m. until midnight at Calico Jack’s, local DJ Alexi will be on deck. A veteran of Cayman’s music scene, Canadian born Alexi has been working the turntables for the past decade. Originally a trained chef, Alexi has become a mainstay on Cayman’s entertainment scene, thanks to his ability to attract the crowds wherever he plays. He credits an eclectic mix of musical influences, including Elvis Presley, Boy George, Paul Oakenfold and Bob Sinclair.

Concluding this year’s festival is DJ Henrix, a Miami-based DJ who capped off 2012 with two tracks in the ADE Buzz charts. With his unique style of production that embodies progressive drops and melodic breaks, Henrix is among the best DJs in Miami.

Tickets for Friday night are $15 in advance, $20 at the gate, $25 after 11 p.m. Tickets for Saturday’s boat party are $30, including free admission to the after-party at Calico Jacks. Sperate admission to the Saturday night party at Calico Jacks is $10. For more details, visit ciwmf.ky.
