When Sharon Dalumpines talks of her recent trip to the Philippines, she starts to cry.
The pre-school teacher’s experience has left her “speechless” but is one she wants people to know about.
A teacher at Cayman’s Tiny Tots Academy, Ms. Dalumpines returned to her hometown of Visayas last month to deliver donations to young children at the Bitadton Daycare Center, whose lives were devastated by last year’s Typhoon Yolanda.
Staff and families of children at Tiny Tots donated toys, gifts and educational materials as part of the academy’s Christmas charity drive.
Ms. Dalumpines spent five weeks with the children at the daycare center in the Philippines.
“It was a really nice experience,” she said. “All my luggage was packed with toys.”
“You see the joy on the children’s faces after what happened. I’m just speechless,” she added.
The Visayas or Visayan Islands is one of the three main geographical divisions of the Philippines, made up of several islands.
Typhoon Yolanda tore through the region on November 8 as a Category 5 super typhoon. Considered the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record, it caused more than US$1.5 billion worth of damage and claimed the lives of more than 6,000 people. The bodies of victims were still being recovered in January this year.
