Skateboard series comes to Cayman

An international skateboarding tour for young people is making its first stop in the Cayman Islands in what organizers hope will become an annual competition.

The Black Pearl Skate Park will play host to a tournament for under-13s on Saturday, part of the TopGrom International Contest Series.

The organization has sent judges and instructors to the Cayman Islands for a series of clinics this week, culminating in Saturday’s tournament, which starts at 4 p.m. at the skate park in Grand Harbour.

TopGrom hosts tournaments across the world from Australia to Brazil.

Michael Myles, president of the Cayman Islands Skateboard Association, said the tournament would mean more exposure for Cayman’s young skaters, as well as a chance to compete against youngsters from overseas.

“This is the largest under-13 skateboarding series in the world. It is the first time we have had an event like this in Cayman. We hope that this will become an annual competition.”

Mr. Myles said around 25 youngsters attended the first clinic on Wednesday. He said the event is primarily about fun and improving skills.

Anyone can enter simply by turning up at the skate park by 4 p.m. on Saturday.
