The Cayman Islands produced a number of roller hockey medals at a youth competition in Florida.
Kings Sports Center sent four teams, consisting of male and female players, to Fort Myers for a North American Roller Hockey Championship tournament. Cayman did well as the Squirt division (12 and Under) won gold, the Mites (10 and Under) and Atom (8 and Under) won silver medals and the Peewee (14 and Under) division had their best finish in international play as they went 1-2 to finish fourth.
Cayman beat the Prowlers, 6-4, in the Squirt group final. Kai Robinson-Allard put Cayman in front with a goal two minutes into the game. The Prowlers responded with a goal from their top scorer John Hurd. Robinson Allard scored again, on a pass from Ethan Finlason, before Michael Lesh of the Prowlers would level the score at 2-2. In the second period, Zach Perkins and Hurd scored for the Prowlers while Allard (two goals), Jered Holmes and Finlason scored for Cayman, with Lex Dobson adding an assist.
In the Atom division final, Cayman played against local team, the Blackjacks, and lost a thriller, 7-6. The teams played one another in the round robin segment, with Cayman getting the win.
As soon as the puck dropped, Cayman was more aggressive and wasted no time getting on the board, with Andrew Hastings scoring first on a nice pass play from Connor Kelley. Cayman would score six minutes later courtesy of Connor Finch. The Blackjacks got a goal from superstar forward Alexis Fitzsimmons, before Cayman responded with Hastings scoring again on a nice individual effort and Finch adding another. Cayman ended the first period up 4-1.
Fitzsimmons scored his second for the Blackjacks a minute into the second period. Cayman would get a score from Kelley before the Blackjacks’s Brooke Hankinson scored on a pass play from Fitzsimmons, who later nabbed his third goal. With five minutes left in the game, Fitzsimmons made a nice pass over to Frank Lodico who scored to tie the game, 5-5.
Fitzsimmons would then steal the puck with 1:45 left in the game and skate around the Cayman team to score and give the Blackjacks their first lead. With 13 seconds left, Cayman’s Kelley gathered a loose puck in the slot and scored to tie the game at 6-6. Fitzsimmons would score the game-winning goal off of a face-off with four seconds left.
Cayman’s Kayden Hiryok and Phillip Wang Tong were the top goalies during the round robin stage, combining for 21 saves on 26 shots for a 80.8 save percentage. Fitzsimmons of the Blackjacks was top scorer with eight goals and two assists.
In the Mite division final, the Gulf Coast Eagles Blue beat Cayman, 6-3. The Eagles were the team to beat in this division but had a slow start in the final. Cayman scored the opening goal – courtesy of Sadie Finch – at the end of the first period. Gulf Coast responded with two quick goals in the second period from Owen Keyser. Justin Hastings had both of Cayman’s second half goals as the Eagles got more scoring from Logan Deerey, Anthony Zebley, Evan Edwards and Anthony Khal.
