Veterans lead the way as local smashers climb the ranks

The Cayman Islands cemented its place as one of the top squash nations in the region.

Cayman finished fourth overall at the 2014 Caribbean Area Squash Association Team Championships. Last week’s tournament in Barbados, which featured over 100 players from around the Caribbean, saw three teams of Caymanian players – mens, womens and veterans – earn a total of 15 points to outdo the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (10 points), Jamaica and Bermuda (both had six points). Cayman was just off the pace set by Guyana (20 points), Trinidad and Tobago (22 points) and the Barbadians – the overall winners with 24 points.

Cayman’s veterans led the way at the Barbados Squash Club, accounting for six points thanks to a third place finish in their class. That squad consisted of Ken Moore, Jeffrey Broderick, Janet Sairsingh and Mariam Goodall.

The ladies were not far off the mark, placing fourth in their division and nabbing five points. The team featured Marlene West, Eilidh Bridgeman and Lara Conolly – all of whom had notable positions in the individual segment. Bridgeman placed seventh overall and the association has her ranked as the region’s eighth-best player. Conolly placed 11th in the tournament, making the semifinals of the Plate competition. West would be named the second-best player in the region by the association, behind only Karen Meakins of Barbados.

Cayman’s men ended up in fifth place and earned four points. The team featured Cameron Stafford, Mark Chaloner, Julian Jervis, Warren Urquhart, Isaiah Robinson and Jasun Sairsingh. Stafford was the star performer, ending up second overall in the tournament and being ranked second in the region by the association. He was runner-up to Jamaica’s Christopher Binnie in the men’s individual event.

Chaloner was ranked sixth-best in the region by the association. Jervis was rated in the top 16 for the tournament.

The majority of Cayman’s players competed in Glasgow, Scotland at the XX Commonwealth Games this summer.
