Roach wants final drive to boost Cancer Society funds

Formula 1 Fans of the Cayman Islands met to watch the Monza race at PD’s in Galleria Plaza on Sunday and were not disappointed.

Club organizer Danny Roach said, “The race was filled with excitement from start to finish, with much of the best wheel-to-wheel racing taking place behind the first three cars.”

Lewis Hamilton’s win moved him to within 22 points of his Mercedes teammate Rosberg in the drivers championship points race. Rosberg was second and Felipe Massa (Williams) third.

The next grand prix is on Sept. 21 and is the much anticipated night race on the streets of Singapore where Hamilton has a good chance to close the gap again.

Daniel Ricciardo will try to capitalize on the slower, tighter track to take another win for Red Bull Racing, said Roach and he hopes Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso will be focused on getting the fourth place position back from the Finnish newcomer Valtteri Bottas who drives for Williams.

This year is the first time where the final race of the season, in Sao Paolo, has double its points value so the winner in Brazil will get 50 instead of the 25 normally available for a win and the same is for every position down to 10th where the points are doubled.

Rosberg has 238 points, Hamilton 216, Ricciardo 166, Bottas 122 and Alonso 121.

“This helps to ensure there may be at least three drivers capable of winning the championship,” said Roach.

Twenty-eight fans watched the race, raising $137 for the Cayman Islands Cancer Society. “I want to welcome Cayman Creperie as our newest marketing partner and to thank them for their door prize donations,” Roach said.

“We have only six races left this season and I would like to set a goal of at least $250 to be raised at each of them.”

With Mercedes dominating all season, he joked that Red Bull Racing fans have been noticeably absent from many races recently and wished Gina Kettner a speedy and full recovery from her vacation accident two months ago.

The club had many winners drawn from the free ticket barrel, many of whom generously put their prize back in to be redrawn, including Julie Blais, Pete Slocock and Wendy Leslie. The door prizes were provided by Automotive Art Cayman, Power Flower, Cayman Creperie, RUBIS and Cayman Distributors Group.
