Oscar “Blade Runner” Pistorius will be eligible to compete in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, if he has served his sentence by the time the Games begin.
The 27-year-old South African was found guilty of culpable homicide on Friday following the judge’s ruling that he killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp by mistake.
Pistorius will be sentenced on Oct. 13 and he could compete at Rio if he has already served his sentence.
“We wouldn’t stand in his way,” said IPC spokesman Craig Spence.
Sprinter Pistorius is a 200- and 400-meter runner. He has won six gold medals at three Paralympic Games. He made history by becoming the first amputee sprinter to compete at the Olympics, in London in 2012.
Spence, the IPC director of media and communications, said that the organization’s sentiments are with the family and friends of Steenkamp.
But he said the IPC would not block Pistorius if he had served his sentence and wanted to compete at Rio.
