Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has signed a huge deal with HBO Sports after being drawn away from Showtime.
It is an obvious move by HBO to regain its reputation as the top TV boxing channel and it sees the 24-year-old Mexican – who already has a massive following in his homeland – as an ideal replacement after Floyd “Money” Mayweather unexpectedly left HBO for Showtime last year.
Alvarez’s only loss in 46 bouts was when outpointed by Mayweather last September.
Alvarez is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions who also lost Mayweather when he jumped to Showtime.
Light-middleweight Alvarez claimed that he has always wanted to fight on HBO because he will reach a bigger audience.
Golden Boys founder Oscar De La Hoya said, “Canelo is the best young fighter in the sport and this move will help line him up to fight top opponents for many years to come.”
Diplomatic De La Hoya added that he hopes that this didn’t damage his relationship with Showtime.
In recent years, there was an unwritten rule that fighters should not be matched with boxers from the rival TV companies. Now this dynamic could change.
