NS District Council elected

Deputy Chairman Archie Whittaker was the top vote-getter in the North Side Council elections at the Craddock Ebanks Civic Centre last week. Carol Scott was elected treasurer and Shari Whittaker is secretary.

The three new council officers are Jay Ebanks, Chad Powell and Patricia Ebanks.

Maxine Bodden Robinson remains chairperson. She succeeded Stanley Panton in March after he moved out of the district. She was not up for re-election at this time.

MLA Ezzard Miller has traditionally been the final speaker at council meetings, advising residents or seeking input on pending legislation and events likely to impact the district.

The North Side District Council was formed shortly after the 2009 general elections. An early major project was the installation of roadside closed-circuit cameras. Other activities have included crime prevention and hurricane safety presentations, beautification efforts, meetings with potential developers and social functions.

The 2009 Constitution provides for “Advisory District Councils” and the Legislative Assembly passed a law in early 2011 to establish the councils as advisory bodies to the elected Members of Legislative Assembly.
