The Cayman Islands is sending a team of 30-plus, ranging from age 5 to over 50, and is holding a series of team training sessions and demos in preparation for the championships from July 17 to 19.
Getting the entire team to Trinidad is a hurdle, and real estate company Williams² has stepped up as the first significant sponsor. Cathy Williams of Williams² has long supported the Purple Dragon Cayman Islands team and is sponsoring a new event, the Purple Dragon Road Warriors Fun Run. It will become an annual fundraising event for the team, organizers said. The event is scheduled for May 23 and location is being finalized.
“Purple Dragon is very close to the Williams² team’s heart and we are delighted to be establishing this run for the team,” she said. “The dedication undertaken by the team in preparing for an event of this caliber is truly inspiring.”
At the Purple Dragon Martial Arts school, all members follow the Don Jitsu Ryu system created more than 40 years ago by Trinidadian professor Don Jacob.
Sensei Floyd, who heads the Cayman Islands dojo, is delighted that the team is receiving support from Williams².
“The Purple Dragon World Championships are every five years, so this is an incredibly important opportunity to exceed expectations as a team and to deliver the best we can individually,” he said. “The Williams² fun run sponsorship is our first fundraising success, and we hope for an impressive turnout.
“Fundraising helps to ensure the entire team can attend the event, providing accessibility to those who do not have the means to attend otherwise.”
