Senior aces have smashing chance

Local tennis players have just a couple of days left to enter Grand Cayman’s first-ever International Tennis Federation seniors tournament.

Numerous overseas players are expected, including large contingents from Canada and Jamaica, and players have until Oct. 14 to sign up via the International Tennis Federation website.

The Grade 5 ITF event, which is for over-35s, runs Nov. 2-8 at the Tennis Club in South Sound.

There are singles, doubles and mixed doubles categories in age groups 35 and Over to 85 and Over in five-year increments in the singles events for men and women.

Doubles and mixed doubles will have categories from 35 and Over to 65 and Over in 10-year increments for men and women.

Rob Seward of the CITC said, “We don’t know exactly how many overseas players we’ll get, as the ITF won’t release the names and nationalities of registered players until after the deadline. But, the number of entries into the junior ITF tournament, which will run in parallel to the seniors, has been overwhelming.

“We have 75 confirmed players coming from countries including the USA, France, Canada, Jamaica, Japan and Brazil, plus we have another 29 on the waiting list.”

The deadline for the junior entry closed on Oct. 6, which is why the club has all the details, said Seward.

Entering the seniors tournament is straightforward, he added. First, the player must register for an IPIN number with the ITF on its website.

“This seniors tournament should be really good fun, a chance to watch and play lots of tennis, as well as socializing with visiting players,” Seward said. “Quite a few local players have told us they’ve already signed up, but we just want people to be aware that the deadline’s coming up, so if they haven’t yet registered, time is running out.”
