Derek Haines has become something of a local hero after running six marathons in one year to raise money for Cayman HospiceCare. Not content to sit on his laurels, he is now eyeing another goal: raising $50,000 for the Special Needs Foundation of Cayman.
The foundation’s aim is very simple – to ensure that those with special needs are given the same opportunities as everyone else and to reach their maximum potential.
Many will have seen Haines making his way down the roads of the island over the last few weeks, and although the idea of joining him in his quest would leave most of them cold, there are other ways to support the cause.
On Tuesday, Dec. 1, there will be a “50/50 Happy Hour” held at Tiki Beach from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be provided and a percentage of the bar takings will be donated to the foundation.
Attendees will also have a chance to purchase raffle tickets in the hope of winning a prize.
The title of the event is a nod to Haines’s challenge to 50 other runners to join him when he takes on the Cayman Islands Marathon on Dec. 6. The happy hour evening will be a social affair for those who have already signed up for the challenge, and perhaps will entice others to participate.
