A 20-year-old Savannah man is being treated off island for serious injuries after his dirt bike collided with a police vehicle on Thursday night.

The man had been being pursued by RCIPS, including the police helicopter. According to an RCIPS press release, the driver of the dirt bike failed to respond to police sirens and emergency lights signaling him to stop.

Police began the pursuit in the vicinity of Harbor Drive, where they spotted the dirt bike speeding away from the scene of an attempted robbery at Smugglers Rum Bar in central George Town.

At the bar, two men brandishing handguns tried and failed to rob patrons.

Officers responded to a report of the attempted robbery around 10:15 p.m. Two men, with their faces covered, entered the establishment and demanded valuables from patrons, according to police. The men then left the bar empty handed.

The police described one culprit as “stocky and well-built” and about 5’10” in height, while the second culprit was also 5’10” in height but slim build.

Both men wore long-sleeved shirts and dark pants.

Anyone with information about the attempted robbery is encouraged to call George Town CID at 949-4222. Anonymous tips can be provided via the Miami-based call center of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online.
