Seven Mile Swimmers celebrates first anniversary

Swimmers take part in last year's triathlon. This year's race will be held on Sunday, Nov. 6.

Seven Mile Swimmers, Cayman’s newest swim team to be affiliated with the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association, recently celebrated its first anniversary.

In August 2015, when the team was formalized, coach Darren Mew and the SMS board had high expectations, a press release states, “and in just the first year, the team has exceeded what everyone had hoped for.”

The team, which trains at the Lions pool, is a Cayman Islands registered not-for-profit organization. It is currently limited to 45 swimmers. This allows the coach to give each young athlete individualized instruction and provides the necessary time in practice for him to fine-tune each swimmer’s technique, the press release states.

Coach Mew emphasizes technique rather than distance, especially in a swimmer’s formative years. He believes that swimming should be a balanced part of a young athlete’s life, and he encourages swimmers to participate in a range of sporting activities. He has been coaching full-time for 8 years, 5-1/2 of which have been in Cayman.

Coach Mew is a two-time Olympic finalist who was in the World’s Top 10 for 10 years, with two of those years as No. 2. He has also held Commonwealth, British and English records, and in April 2004, he set the fourth fastest 100m breaststroke time in wold history, according to the press release.

Not only has Coach Mew been working on building strong swimmers, he has also been working on bringing them together as a team. He and team manager, Terri Barrowman have hosted a number of team-building days throughout the year, and board member Lucy Beighton put on an end-of-year team party.

Seven Mile Swimmers had strong results in all of the local swim meets and sea swims, with personal bests being set consistently throughout the year, including some Development Team times and a CARIFTA qualifying time, the press release states. The team also traveled to Florida to compete in an international meet in a 50m pool and plans are under way to do the same this year.

Organizers thanked the commitment and dedication of the SMS board members and the corporate sponsors, including title sponsor KPMG.
