The local youth football leagues were back on the pitch Saturday after a mid-term hiatus, playing games at venues across Grand Cayman.

Cayman Prep brought its boys’ B teams and the girls’ Blue team to West Bay Town Hall Field to face off against teams from Sir John A. Cumber Primary.

The Cayman Prep 9B team was undefeated heading into the weekend, while Sir John A. Cumber’s Under 9 Boys had yet to record a win this season. The game was close, but Cayman Prep captain Matthew Bonikowski scored in the 33rd minute to give his team a 1-0 victory.

Cayman Prep Blue also came out on top against Sir John A. Cumber with a 4-0 victory in the Girls’ Under 11 game. Olivia Ridley scored first for Cayman Prep, and Olivia Thorpe added a hat trick in the win.

But there would not be a Cayman Prep sweep.

Sir John A. Cumber’s Under 11 boys’ team was undefeated heading into Saturday, and Xavi Tibbetts scored in the first five minutes to give the home team an edge over Cayman Prep.

Xander Lee answered for Cayman Prep B with a goal in the 26th minute to tie the game.

A taut defensive struggled consumed much of the second half, but Sir John A. Cumber got the 2-1 victory on the strength of a goal from Brian Ebanks from a tight angle in the 50th minute.
