Alex Pascal, the Cayman Islands national record holder in javelin (75.38 metres), is hoping to make the podium at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, later this year.
“I am back to where I was when I was at my peak,” Pascal, 27, told the Cayman Compass. “I’m looking forward to all the meets that are coming up, especially the Commonwealth Games.”
Pascal, who claimed gold for Cayman at the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships in 2013, had been rehabbing an injury that kept him away from competition for nearly two seasons.
He was cleared to compete again last summer and returned to his training grounds at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex but, due to the pandemic, he was forced to the sidelines yet again.
“The only meets were the ones in Europe and because of the COVID-19 restrictions we weren’t able to travel, especially with my job… and having to quarantine,” he said.
When the University of Missouri alum was asked if he will be aiming for a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, he responded, “Of course. Definitely planning to get a medal this year.”
The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will run from 28 July through 8 Aug.
