Amazing artwork doesn’t have to cost a fortune and can be created in minutes at home without even picking up a paintbrush.

Art aficionado Sara Jan created canvases using material, a frame and staple gun to stunning effect.

“It’s a great way to make custom artwork to suit your home or office and doesn’t require a lot of money or expertise,” she says.

The colourful canvas (pictured above) was made by Sara with fabric from Finnish design company Marimekko.

The white canvas (left) features an upcycled bedspread.

SARA’S TIPS:

• Search in local fabric stores, or the Humane Society, Red Cross and One Dog at a Time thrift shops for fabric.

• When travelling, look for material in local markets.

• Shop online on sites such as Etsy or eBay.

• Upcycle fabric from household items including throws or cushions.

HOW SHE DID IT:

• Canvas frame kit from Office Supply.

• Wire hanging kit from A. L Thompson’s.

• Already had staple gun.

• Material should be 2 to 3 inches larger than the frame.

• Stretch the fabric over the frame, staple in the middle of each side.

• Flip the canvas over and make sure the fabric is centred on the frame the way you would like.

• Next, staple the corners, then staple all the sides.

• Add the hanging wire.

• Place on wall, sit back and enjoy.
