Cayman fencers appeal for government assistance

Earlier this month, fencing fans and government officials were treated to a free demonstration from Caymanians Sadie Solomon and Ben Ebanks Jr. at Kings Sports Centre.

The Cayman Islands Fencing Federation used the event to publicise the Olympic sport which is currently not considered one of government’s focus sports.

Solomon, 17, captains the Cayman Islands women’s fencing programme. The message she wanted to convey to Sports Minister Bernie Bush, who attended the demonstration, was simple: “Give [fencing] a chance.”

“You see some of these kids doing football, basketball, baseball… and they all started from the ground and worked their way up,” Solomon said. “Some of them were given help and so I think we deserve just as much as these other sports.”

After the exhibition, Bush told the Compass he will be following the fencing federation and offer assistance where necessary.
