Volleyball players battled it out Sunday, 2 Oct., on Seven Mile Beach, for the start of the Beach Volleyball Summer Corporate League.

“It’s an amazing turnout and we have all levels,” Tammy Kelderman, of the Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation, told the Compass. League play was originally supposed to start in September, but had been delayed.

“We have amazing corporate teams out here. We even have schools, we have a church. So, it’s not just auditors and lawyers, those types of firms. We’re more inclusive and diverse this year.”

The league comprises 11 teams divided into three (A, B, and C) divisions. In the first of the four weeks scheduled for competition, FBC leads the A division, with an undefeated run of three consecutive matches.

In the B division, Priestleys ended on top with three wins against no losses. St. Ignatius leads the C division, going undefeated in its first two matches.

The event is used as a developmental tournament to help athletes transition from indoor volleyball to playing on the beach, while also inviting experienced beach players and beginners.

“We have some kids that are training in indoors but they’re coming out here to play some beach as well,” Kelderman said. “We have people here that are as young as 18 and as old as 60. So, it’s an amazing range of ages and everyone is having a good time.”
