Bulging biceps and gleaming pecs were on display as some of the world’s top bodybuilders strutted their stuff in Cayman last weekend.
Athletes came out in numbers on Saturday, 5 Nov., showing off their physiques across several divisions during the Drug Free Athletes Coalition (DFAC) 2022 World Championships at the Arts and Recreation Centre in Camana Bay.
Almost 40 competitors across 11 categories competed at the event, in front of an audience of more than 100 spectators.
Nathan Williams took first in the Pro Class; and Joshua Olagoke and Zoe Leeming-Watts claimed the men’s and women’s bodybuilding championships, respectively.
Leeming-Watts, who travelled from England to Cayman for the first time, told the Cayman Compass after claiming her second pro win that she was optimistic heading into the event.
“This is my second competition as a DFAC pro,” she said. “I was pretty confident. My condition, my size has grown since 2019, so I know I was coming bigger and better into the Caymans.”
Denmark native Kwabena Boakye, who was also visiting Cayman for the first time, was victorious in the men’s heavyweight category and also took the overall runner-up. He told the Compass that while he was happy with the result, he wished he had finished higher overall.
“I flew from Denmark, then to London and then here,” Boakye said. “It feels fantastic. I wish I could’ve done a little bit better, but I’m a bit too shy; it’s kind of like a stammer and I think I can get over it, but I have to keep practising. I appreciate getting the win for my category, though.”
Boakye also praised the island, noting that he enjoyed “everything” during his stay.
“The Cayman Islands is beautiful,” he said. “Everyone is so friendly, and I love the accents, the food and the sun. It’s amazing and I can’t get enough of it and I’m coming back for sure.”
