Cayman rider sets new record in Jet Around Cayman

Jordan McLean receives his prize from organiser Mario Rankin.

Cayman’s Jordan ‘JJ’ McLean set a new course record to take victory in the Jet Around Cayman race on Easter Monday.

McLean led home a fleet of 22 WaveRunner riders, completing a lap of the island in 51 minutes and 11 seconds, starting and ending at Public Beach.

Local rider McLean also finished ahead of pro riders from overseas in a competitive field for the annual event, which has begun to re-establish itself as one of the highlights on the sporting calendar.

Meanwhile, a miscalculation over fuel cost two competitors a chance of glory. Skipping a refuel stop in smooth conditions seemed like a good ploy for Gary Whittaker Jr until he ran out of gas while in second place.

Organiser Mario Rankin said it had been an “awesome” event with great support from the ministries of sport, finance and tourism, and corporate sponsors including Monster energy drinks and Tortuga.

As well as the glory, McLean took $10,000 for first place in the pro category. Cline Glidden Jr. won $4,000 for first place in the amateur event.

“It was a great event and we look forward to doing this annually for the foreseeable future,” said Rankin.
