Justice Stanley John on Monday adjourned the McKeeva Bush indecent assault trial until Tuesday morning to enable legal arguments to be carried out in the absence of the jury.

The judge explained to the jury, before excusing them for the day, that it was normal practice in a trial for legal issues to arise, which must be considered by the court.

They were instructed to return to court at 11am on Tuesday.

The substance of the submissions by counsel that led to the adjournment cannot be reported for legal reasons.

Bush faces two charges of indecent assault, and two alternate charges of common assault. He denies all charges.

The jury of five women and two men – as well as three male reserve jurors – last week heard evidence from the two alleged victims in the case, as well as from the husband of one of the complainants, a police officer and senior civil servants. They also viewed CCTV footage captured on the night of the alleged offences.

The charges against Bush stem from two separate incidents that allegedly occurred during a cocktail reception, which was part of a Caribbean Tourism Organization conference, hosted by the Cayman Islands government and held at The Ritz-Carlton hotel on 13 Sept. 2022.
