When Brian Phelps embarked on his morning walk over the weekend, he spotted something out of the ordinary nestled in the seagrass along the coastline.

As he drew closer, he found what can easily be described as a once-in-a-lifetime find –  messages in a bottle.

“I found it early morning beach walking on the south coast,” Phelps told the Cayman Compass on Monday.

Though excited by the find, he said he does not plan to open the bottle, but instead send it back on its oceanic journey.

“Due to the contents appearing personal, I am going to put the bottle back out to sea next time I’m offshore. From the little I can see, the bottle contains three-to-four letters from family members dated 2021 to a lost member of the family,” Phelps said.

The four notes, which are written on different colour papers and at least one of which appears to have been written by a child, are encased in a glass bottle and sealed with cork.

Messages in bottles have been themes in songs and somewhat mythical finds for most hunting along the coastline.

Back in 2021, a North Side family discovered a handwritten message from across the seas in an emerald-coloured bottle. In their case, their discovery was made while holidaying in East End over the Easter weekend that year.

Patricia DaCosta, who found that note, made contact with the writer and they exchanged emails on the discovery. It turned out that a US couple had deposited their bottle in the water off Florida and it had made its way to the eastern shore of Cayman.
