Justice Roy James on Tuesday instructed the jury in the McKeeva Bush rape trial to stand down until Friday, to give them time to make storm preparations, as Hurricane Beryl heads towards Cayman.
After several days of delays while counsel and the judge discussed legal issues relating to the case, seven jurors and three alternates were selected on Thursday, 27 June.
With Monday being a public holiday, the jurors returned to court Tuesday, only to be told the trial would not begin until Friday.
James told the jurors he would start the trial then, so that they could “take care of your families and your properties” as Cayman was, at that time, under a Hurricane Watch.
A Hurricane Warning – which indicates hurricane-force conditions are expected within 36 hours – was issued less than an hour later.
Before sending the jury away, the judge warned them not to talk to anyone about the trial.
At the time of the adjournment, Hurricane Beryl was forecast to impact the Cayman Islands in the early hours of Thursday morning.
