A former licensing officer and two others have been charged with various offences including defrauding the government, misconduct in public office and bribery following an Anti-Corruption Commission investigation.
Marc Edward Chin, 36, a former Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing employee from Newlands; Keron Leanard Watler, 30, of East End; and Shomar Peabo Bazil, 28, of Lower Valley, have all been charged with offences under the Anti-Corruption Act.
Though the circumstances surrounding the offences were not released, the commission, in a statement on Tuesday afternoon, said the charges followed “a complex and protracted investigation”.
Chin has been charged with four offences – breach of trust, fraud on the government, conspiracy to commit fraud on the government, and misconduct in a public office contrary to common law.
The Cayman Compass has reached out to Acting Deputy Governor Gloria McField-Nixon for confirmation of Chin’s former post and any information relating to his charges. We are awaiting a response.
Watler is facing charges of breach of trust and conspiracy to commit fraud on the government.
Bazil has been charged with bribery of a public officer.
All three men will appear in court at 10am on Tuesday, 6 Aug., the commission said.
This is the second time in as many months that a former civil servant has faced corruption-related charges.
In June, Maxwell Renal Linwood, a former Department of Environmental Health employee, was charged with five offences – breach of trust, obtaining property by deception, being concerned in a money laundering arrangement, acquiring criminal property and transferring criminal property – after an Anti-Corruption Commission investigation.
Omar Anthony Samuels was charged with two offences in that case – obtaining property by deception and being concerned in a money laundering arrangement.
