Cayman is off to a good start once again at the Olympics, this time with track star Davontè Howell who has advanced to the next round of the 100-metre sprint after winning his preliminary round Saturday morning.
“It was a good run, it was just the prelims, so I have to save some for the next rounds that are coming up because this is where the big dogs come in now,” Howell said after his race. “So, I’m just happy I was able to make it through and execute.”
In front of 80,000 people, Howell, ran 10.31 seconds – the fourth fastest time coming out of the prelims at the Stade de France.
“There is a few Caymanians in the stands but you could still hear them … it’s a great feeling,” he added, noting that his time didn’t bother him because it’s only his first race in Paris and improvements will be made.
The top-ranked Caymanian sprinter, who holds a best time of 10.09 seconds will now have stiffer competition, but the confident Howell is a man on a mission to make it to the semi-final but he has one more stage before he gets there.
Howell is scheduled to race Round 1 – Heat 5 at 4:55 am Cayman time.
