I read with interest the Compass article on the impact of US tariffs. Statements such as “there is very little small islands can do” and “it takes time” represent a very short-sighted approach to tackling such an important issue!
Yes, one island alone has limited strength, but the Caribbean encompasses a number of island nations, and the power of one can become the power of many!
Simon Cawdery’s suggestion of the development of a Caribbean transshipment hub is an excellent idea. However, ideas remain only that, unless there is political willingness to follow through and a cooperative multi-nation approach to spearheading the idea to fruition.
I say strike while the iron is hot. Cayman should take the lead and set up the agenda for a multi-nation Caribbean conference to be held within the next 90 days. The lack of will is the only limit to what is possible!
