Beauty, creativity, community and culture came alive under one roof for the third annual Natural Hair Show held at Harquail Theatre on Sunday night.
The evening brought together natural hair lovers, stylists, barbers and vendors from across the island to celebrate the beauty and diversity of hair, including coils, curls, locs, and everything in between.
A natural hair model showcase featured some 38 models, including women, men, teens, and children displaying a mixture of avant-garde, multi-cultural and glamorous hairstyles.
The ‘Let’s Talk Crowns’ panel discussion explored hair care, tips and scalp health, as well as the latest products and trends.
Although disappointed in this year’s turnout, organiser Samantha Mitchell said this year’s event was great.
“I was very pleased, and I believe it was better than previous years, in terms of the creativity,” she said.
Local stylists brought their hair game during a hair art competition showcasing their best hairstyle.
Annie Kay Gayle of The Salon Boujee took home first place for showcasing Cayman culture in her hairstyles, including the Cayman turtle, stingrays and the three Cayman Islands.
Jessica Malcolm of New Growth Naturals Salon placed second, followed by Taneisha Grant of Mobile Executives Super Spa, who took home third place.
Mitchell, a certified trichologist and champion of natural beauty, created the show in 2023 following the launch of her natural hair care products.
“We wanted to have something creative along with the products, so [we] paired the products with a show of natural hairstyles and entertainment. It has grown so much,” she said.
When it comes to confidence, Mitchell said hair has a lot do with it.
“When your hair looks good, when it’s healthy, when it’s at its best, you feel good, so it’s important to have healthy strands, and I’m all for advocating for that.”
