Prospect Playhouse will come alive with the celebration of imagination, music and community spirit as the Cayman Drama Society presents a production of ‘The Princess and the Pea’ for local audiences from 20 Sept. through 5 Oct.

“Our forthcoming production is a fairy-tale for all ages but especially aimed at primary school age children. Our special adaptation of this Hans Christian Andersen classic, by CDS’ own Alena Valiaeva, has a run-time of 45 minutes with no intermission,” Mike Bishop, the play’s producer and CDS’ new board chairman.

The production features five cast members, including a narrator that tells the audience about the story.

A heartfelt gift

Valiaeva, the show’s director said, “the essence of theatre is magic, and it takes you to another world and makes you believe it is real. Its purpose is not only to entertain but also to educate and inspire.”

This production does just that. Blending the timeless charm of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale with a rich musical tapestry – from Beethoven to Brubeck, jazz to soft rap – the show is designed to resonate across generations. Children won’t just be watching; they’ll be part of the story, with interactive moments that invite them to help shape the narrative.

“There is constant interaction with kids’ participation,” Valiaeva said, adding, “It makes them believe they are creating this story together.”

The production also pays tribute to the Cayman Islands community, with local touches, including the Cayman Compass newspaper, woven into the performance.

“I wanted to dedicate this play to our beautiful Cayman Islands community, which I am very grateful to be a part of,” Valiaeva said. “With a talented cast and crew bringing the story to life, ‘The Princess and the Pea’ is more than a play – it’s a heartfelt gift to the island’s youngest dreamers and their families.”
