The winter season of the adult co-ed slow pitch softball league will swing into action later this month.
A mandatory meeting for captains of teams will take place Monday, 9 January, at 7pm in the clubhouse at the Field of Dreams, where all of the games will take place.
The adult slow pitch league is a programme of the Cayman Islands Little League Association, which owns the Field of Dreams facility. Programme coordinator Alan Markoff said the season would consist of 12 regular season games plus play-offs, which every participating team is involved in.
“This season, we’ll have a different play-off system than we have in recent years,” said Markoff. “Instead of a single elimination tournament, we’ll have a double elimination tournament, meaning every team is guaranteed at least two play-off games.”
The programme has several leagues of play, ranging from a beginners league that uses “soft touch” balls to a highly competitive league of very experienced players.
“We have a level of play for everyone,” said Markoff. “Our C league is perfect for businesses that want to support their staff doing a team-building activity that doesn’t require a lot of athleticism, but is a healthy, social and fun event.”
Games are generally played Monday through Thursday evenings, with most games at 8:15pm but some at 6:30pm. Teams are also required to play two or three weekend games, either on Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Sunday morning or Sunday night.
For the record last season’s winners were KM Ltd, the Glovernauts and The Security Centre Safes.
KM, behind sponsor Brent McComb and pitcher David Nielsen, claimed the A league crown for the first time by defeating regular season winners the PWC Legion of Boom in the championship game.
The Glovernauts, thanks to heroics from Tarrah Crowley, beat the Maples Sluggers in extra innings to win the B league after falling short for a number of years.
The Safes, behind Joey Hew and captain Brad Watts, orchestrated a repeat championship by downing regular season leaders the Billy Bones Jager Bombers.
The fee for teams is CI$1,500 and includes field rental for at least 14 games, game balls and score books. Teams are also given 50 Cayman Islands Little League discount cards, good for discounted merchandise at various stores and restaurants, which can be given away or sold for $5 each.
Anyone interested in entering a team in the league should contact Alan Markoff at [email protected] or on 325-6824. People interested in playing but who don’t have a team can put their names on a list for pick up by one of the existing teams.
“We usually can find spots for anyone who wants to play,” said Markoff.
