Basketball in the Cayman Islands will soon get a woman’s touch.
The national women’s league, put on by the Cayman Islands Basketball Association, is expected to start next Saturday, 22 January. As Director of Sports and association member Collin Anglin states, the league launches early to clear room on the local calendar.
“There is the national women’s league from 22 January and the men’s league begins 4 February,” Anglin said. “The idea is to wrap up by May to clear the calendar for national team training.”
Most of the focus for the 2012 campaign should be on the Home Gas Flames. Behind prodigy La-Torae Nixon, 14, the Flames claimed their first ever women’s title. Home Gas took down heavy favourites the Dominos Lady Heels in the championship series.
Wendy Manzanares is among the veterans poised to return to the Home Gas fold this season. She mentioned in passing that the squad figures to see a few shake-ups with the absence of players like guard Lauren Keller.
Dominos, behind perennial threat Dionne Anglin, figure to be in the mix for another title game appearance. Last season Anglin got support from top scorer Courtisha Ebanks and role players Maggie Ebanks (who was named Rookie of the Year) and Hannah Parchment.
Consideration should also be given to the Lady Wolves. In their rookie campaign, the club were regular season champions behind stars Cassianne Lawrence and Benecia Thompson.
