Get streetwise for a great cause on Saturday, 14 January, as Camana Bay hosts a street hockey fundraiser.
This will be the second annual event organised by Cayman Islands Youth Roller Hockey Club, which raises awareness of hockey and raises funds for Cayman Hospice Care and UNICEF Cayman Kids this year.
Aaron Knapik tells Weekender that the tournament is for youth players aged 4 to 17 and will be a fun way to play a great sport whilst raising cash for charity.
“The tournament design is such that each team must have one member that is new to the sport of hockey to help encourage more of Cayman’s youth to become active in this growing sport,” he says.
In 2011, over 160 youngsters and mums participated, raising over US$10,000 for charity. This year, says Aaron, the tournament has added an extra rink and over 200 people are expected.
Jeffrey Wight, manager of sports and recreation venues at Camana Bay, says that Camana Bay and Dart Cayman Islands were pleased to sponsor the Cayman Hockey Fights Cancer tournament by providing a venue and equipment as well as funds.
“The Cayman Islands Youth Roller Hockey Club has done a great job of exposing kids to this exciting sport, which is relatively new to the Island. We share their interest in keeping the children of Cayman active and healthy so it only makes sense that we work together and support one another’s efforts.”
Other sponsors include Ernst & Young, BritCay and Mourant Ozannes. There will be Mites, Novice, Atom and PeeWee divisions, as well as an all age’s girls division and the popular mums’ division. One member of each team must be new to the sport – so encourage friends or classmates to try a new sport in aid of a great cause – sounds fab to us. See you there.
Registration forms are available at Kings Sports Centre or online at caymanactive.com. Players must sign up as a team of four and registration is $100.
The event runs from 9am to 5pm at Camana Bay Arts and Recreation Centre.
