The track season gets under way this weekend with some of top junior and senior talent intent to start the year impressively.
The Cayman Islands Athletic Association hosts its first track and field for the 2012 season with the George Town District Meet on Saturday 14 January at 4pm at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
Events being contested are 60 metres, 150m, 300m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, long jump, high jump, javelin, discus and shot put. The meet is open to age groups: 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17 and over.
Athletes to look out for include Chantelle Morrison, Troy Long, Gerome Bodden, Lloyd Barker and Robert Ibeh who all have big ambitions for the season. Morrison won the girls Under-17 100m in front of her home crowd two years ago but injury hampered her competing all last year.
Coach Tyrone Yen said: “Chantelle will be running the 300m to ease herself in. We’re still three months away from the CARIFTA Games and she has plenty of time to get into top shape.
“Troy Long and Lloyd Barker have looked sharp in training and Ashleigh Nalty is only sprinting and not jumping because she has not trained in the jumps for a while.
“We also have some good national junior representatives competing in Pearl Morgan and Jeavhon Jackson. Banelov Thomas broke the at the CAC Championships for ball throw and she will be competing. She is only 12 as is Kiara McLaughlin who has already run an 800m in 2 minutes 29 seconds.” Mikayla mclaughlin, the Caribbean Under-11 100m and 200m champion will also be competing.
Training for the electronic timing will be held from 9am at Truman Bodden on Saturday 14 January. Leroy Cooke of Jamaica will conduct the training.
For registration contact Elizabeth Ibeh on 925-4763, Coach Williams on 925-1943, Coach Yen on 925-6917 or Coach Wason at 916-6966.
